Children Learn What They Live

chanel's picture

I certainly do not profess to be a flawless parent, but I do have this 'blurb' hanging on my fridge. I read it from time to time to remind myself of the effects of negativity.

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealosy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.

We all, as parents, try to do the best we can and the first time I read this, it actually brought tears to my eyes because possibly some of the negative things, I was guilty of.

That is why I always remind myself of the sensitivity of a child and how a parent may react to that childs behavior. I have three, older is a major rebel, middle child, cool kid normal teen, youngest, soon to be rebel, I can feel it.

So, I just wanted to share this with all of you parents.

Do what your mother says, when she says to do it. This, however is in the interest of self-preservation, because she will not only be angry with you, it will spill over on me, and I can mess up on my own just fine. I don't need residual crap from the kids.

So...
Rule # 1...keep mom happy
Rule # 2...what you hear come out of your dad's mouth stays vaulted between us men...never violate this rule for all eternity.
Rule # 3...when dad is in trouble, the kids need to be extra nice to mom in order to save dad's life, or at least from sleeping on the lumpy couch and accidently falling asleep while watching certain kinds of movies only to be woken up by said female and trying to explain that you must have accidentally rolled over on the remote and somehow that "horrible, disgusting film came on."

Basically, the kids job is to shield me from wrath, the good stuff they can learn on the playground.
