Taking for granted

BeatleFan's picture

Being a Westie yesterday I took for granted electricity. The TV went off as I was watching the NFL channel. My wife was drying her hair and the dishwasher was running. Not any more!!! So my wife wanted me to go to Home Depot to buy stuff for the house. Was it open just call and find out. Grab the cordless phone and no dial tone so pick the cell and hey they are open. Wanted to get online and I think I have a moment of brilliance and pick up the lap top to see what is happening with the power. It has battery power so I am smart. Try to go on line and remembered that the wireless router needs electricity to work, I think dumb*** to myself. Got in the car and oops again, traffic lights not on. OK police and firefighters are on duty, Thanks to all who were out there directing traffic, so I make it to Home Depot buy my stuff and my son calls on the cell phone, Yeah something works, and wants me to stop at Wendy's for kids meals. OK I make it over to Wendy's and they are all sitting outside and I make the Mr. Obvious comment, is your power out? So I made it back home and try to open the garage door and nothing happens and think again dumb*** then realized how much we rely on electricity..............

Are you saying that you are dependent on electricy or that you are a dumb**s?

Two years ago we had a lightening strike behind the house that blew out almost all the electrical stuff...tv's/telephones/stereo/etc. So here is my sage advice. Take a day and take pictured or a video of everything in your house and write down all seriel numbers. When we filed our claim it was all done via seriel numbers...God forbid you are standing looking at a pile of smoldering rubble and the agent wants to know the make/model/seriel number of the TV in your bedroom.

(As a side note, that was a sound like I will never forget...here is my best shot at spelling it....KAAWHAMMM!

Just that you take it for granted that the traffic lights would be on and such. Like a brain fart.

The first time the electric went out was on Friday morning and my neighbor had noway of getting into her house cause she relies on the garage door and with no power no garage. She doesn't keep a key to her house either. Your right on how we rely to much on electricity just think about the third world countries. I have done the same thing you think your going to use something when you remember that needs electric to run on DUH !!! I do have a key to my house atleast.

Electrical devices are very important for some of of the bloggers. Some may find battery-powered devices to be sufficient, but others need that 110V torque that only comes from an outlet.

For example, you'll never open a garage door with a battery powered mechanism, especially a bigger, older garage door that has been opened a lot. If you want to lift that off the ground, you need real power to get that off. A battery-powered impact wrench may be good for some jobs, but sometimes you need that 110V if you have a nut that's really tough to get off.
