Touchy Subject? REquest donation for teacher gift?
Tags:
In the past I have collected money for a teacher's gifts for my children's teachers. I appreciate any token amount, etc. - whatever a parent choses to give is perfectly fine by me and I pool the money together and get something special. While my thoughts/views of WHY we are still in school in mid June is irrelevant to ME I am curious to see how others feel before I send out my contribution request letter. In the past I have always had a generous amount of money to work with and all worked out well. This year I hesitate a little. Any thoughts?

the donation collection for our class this year. So far, I have only received $ from 4 parents. I do hope we have more that contribute. It will be interesting to see. I will keep it posted.
As far as how much I'll donate, does anyone know where the "cent" symbol is on the keyboard?
Titan, you are right....you, being the biggest "anti-teacher" person on this board, should never donate to the teacher gift fund. No, instead of being a part of a party that supports labor unions (including teachers), you are a part of one which supports that oil companies can make as much as they want, even if it costs Americans thousands and thousands each year at the pumps. The GOP way cracks me up....they cry and moan about a teacher trying to get $100-$150 more a month to make a better life for their families, but could care less that the senate (their Republican Senate) votes down a bill to tax windfall profits for the oil companies.
So Titan, save your pennies.....save them for the oil companies....giving them to the oil companies is much more useful than sending them to school to make your "180 day a year babysitter" feel appreciated.
PS - you have paid way more in gas price increases this past year than you would have paid in school tax increases even if the teachers got 6%. Your money is going into some millionaire's pocket. CHOMP ON THAT!
Welcome back, good buddy.
I am kind of insulted you only labeled me as "anti-teacher". If I remember your previous comments, doesn't that also label me as "anti-education", "anti-kids", "anti-American", "anti-Christmas", "anti-Easter Bunny", and "anti-anything that makes me feel all warm & fuzzy"?
I must agree with you on one point. Had I known that the Republicans control the world oil market, obviously I would have supported a 40% wage increase for the teachers. Everyone knows those two are directly linked. My only question is, why didn't you let us know this before? The teachers could have gotten their raise, and we would only be paying $1 a gallon for our gas. Man, did we blow that one.
Unless I'm confused about what you're saying. Are you implying that we are being ripped off by the oil companies and our money is being wasted, and we could have just as easily wasted the same money on the teachers?
You have to make your arguments a little clearer. I don't have any problems understanding Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
This will also be resolved in a few months anyway. To quote our next great Democratic savior:
"This is the greatest country in the world. Help me change it".
I take exception with your silly comments TL. As far as I am concerned, Asor was way to kind to you. You are much worse! Stop supporting big oil, grow some corn, turn it into bio-fuel (if the batch turns bad, ferment it further and invite me over for the party) grease yourself down and go save some baby seals.
You should send a gallon of gas as a "teacher appreciation" gift. Maybe SVEA should include this in the next contract negotiation?
Sorry Whois. Thanks to the Democratic congress, I would be liable for any spillage of the gas taken to the teachers. Enviromentally speaking, this would be a disaster for our area. Plus it might kill some of Hotfire's precious baby seals.

I think it is clear which one costs all of us more money
Chew on this!

You took such a strong stand against a teacher raise that would have raised your school taxes in any way, even if only 2 bucks a month. Typical Republican (anti-union) attitude.....
However, you have no problem with the Republicans voting down any attempt to curtail price increases leading to windfall profits at the pumps.
Is that simple enough for you?
PS - I never said you were "anti-anything" except "anti-teacher".
I believe that you want your great education, just at a low cost to yourself.
You need extra money to help support "Big-Oil"
Go back and find one comment of mine where I said I did not want to pay more property tax for a teacher raise. I had no idea whether I would have to pay more under ANY of the proposals. The board was playing games with the budget estimates, and I said that on here. Why are you failing to call me a "board basher" for that?
My problem was and is, the PR stunts that the union tried to pass off as the truth. Perfect example would be the game you use: "You have two choices- you're either 'pro-teacher' or 'anti-teacher'". Every possible argument was made by both sides, over, and over and over again.
The board kept their mouths shut and let the union shot themselves in the foot. You know that's what happen. "This is not about the money...this is about a quality education". No Asor, it was about the money and that's all they had to say.
They didn't need the bullshit and lies. And that my friend, is the trademark of any Democratic strategy. I'm not saying Republicans don't lie. They're just too stupid to get away with it.
Since they didn't get the raise they wanted, I'm now assuming you believe the "quality" of education at SV will continue to suffer. Right? After all, that is what the union's request for more money was going to correct.
Also, please explain to me how the "windfall profits" is going to help you and me at the pumps. And while you're at it, the term "windfall profits" sounds like an additional tax on an amount of profit over a set amount. I didn't go to SV, but that is what I would assume it means. Does it? (I can't imagine any politician playing word games that would make the average American citizen think they meant one thing when it really means something else).
You silly board basher you! And I though I was the biggest "Anti-teacher" poster on this blog. Just goes to show you how the liberals likes to flip flop on positions!
"The teachers could have gotten their raise, and we would only be paying $1 a gallon for our gas. Man, did we blow that one."
Classic and hilarious Titan! Love to hear you argue with the all-knowing, liberal Dumocrat Asor. Hopefully he has been giving all of his extra cash to the Obama campaign because Obama will surely be able to *change* this country.
After all this time, none of you think that I am that stupid to think a SV teacher raise would have affected gasoline prices.
DUH?????
Will you all wake up????
My point is, most of you griped and moaned so much about the raise, yet you support the republicans who don't give a rats a$$ about saving Americans dollars at the pump.
You TOTALLY missed my point......
Yeah, I'm that stupid to think you were serious. Just because I thought TL's response was funny, and it was, doesn't mean that I took your words
to mean exactly that. IT WAS FUNNY...lighten up :)
I have never had issues with you but you need to remember that Congress makes the laws and the Congress right now is run by democrats. So if you have issues you should take it up with the democrats who have control of Congress.
Why do you feel that way, TL? Always feel this way or just this year in particular due to the strike? Just curious....Obviously if your children are "older" I could see....
TL deals mostly in German Bearer Bonds...right now he can't cash them because he knows once they hit the trading floor 50% of the proceeds come to me, 25% for attorney fees (no TL, the matter with the Russian mob is still outstanding, I told you trying to export stolen jeans through the Kybar Pass would never work), 10% goes to Julio for all the anti-biotics you needed after the Guatemalan "incident" and the rest for taxes to Liberia.
You see mom who I hope is 22, it is complicated here. BTW, hook a brother up with a better avatar.
My daughter is a senior. Do I need to go further?
(and no, I've never felt this way before)
I don't know how to change avatars, hotfire! I am happy I figured out how to post!
Smarter than you thought!
to the teachers this year.. I have kids in 5, 7 & 9 .... and was always the 1st to contribute when asked in years past. As far as I see it, the teachers have gotten their gift this year in the form of the contract.. I am not "sour" over the issue... There is no sense going back down that road.. there are points, both good & bad to both sides.. But, now we are faced with kids sitting in hotter schools than they are used to... I am not say " poor kids" either... Back when I was in Elem School, I think I that we used to get out around June 21st every year & I cannot say I remember a hint of air conditioning... Today’s kids are a product of their environment; they live in air-conditioned houses & don't expect to sweat in school either.... Their fault, ? No, they don't know any better .... From what I am hearing, students are upset at the teachers now because of the strike & the teachers are upset with the students because they are constantly bringing it up as the reason of why they are all there sweating away when the rest of their "buddies" are out & enjoying a pool somewhere ----
Best thing that can happen is the arrival of the end of the month & everyone goes there separate ways.... So .. No, there will be no $$$ / no gifts being given, but no tooth-blackening prank chewing gum either.... In the immortal words of the Grateful Dead.. " Lets hang it up & see what tomorrow brings" Which will hopefully be a timely start ( and finish ) of the 2008 – 2009 school year here in Cranberry
Kind of proud of myself over here, Hotfire! I am slightly smarter than I thought! Stang519 - I hear you loud and clear but I am still SO that mom - first in line to organize or give stuff, etc. Just feels un-natural NOT to do it this year. Just a tough time and am afraid by not doing it, I feel like I am harboring a grudge, which I don't. Not really...I like your thought of just moving on and starting fresh...
too much money to give to 7 or 8 teachers.
With price of gas affecting everything, not as inclined to give gifts anyway.
I would just be inclined to have child write a nice note to the teacher.
Having elementary-aged children, I certainly will donate money for gifts for their teachers even though this year has been tough. It's funny how everyone is "hot" again over the strike now that June is here and our kids are still in school, which is to be expected. As far as being hot in the classroom, my kids have not come home complaining, probably because my husband and I don't make a big deal out of it by asking them "was it really hot in school today...are you okay, etc..." Im sure they are zoning out even more this year, but who doesn't at the end of the school year?? Im actually enjoying the pool and the fact that I don't have to deal with all my kids......but that's just me.....slacker mom!
I don't ask my kid either if he was 'hot in school today'. It's freaking obvious when they come home soaked. ( See Haine School 3rd floor) Also, I work, so it makes for an easier June for me, but I still feel bad for the kids still having to be in the oven and really not doing any learning right now.

Are you at least asking them what type of work they are doing My youngest is watching the Sound of Music (He hates Musicals) and My oldest was just given an assignment to write an Outline on The Sound of Music! What the heck is going on here? What ever happened to West Side Story, or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? If they are gonna have to watch musicals for last weeks of school, can't they at least watch a manly musical?
Sorry but my most fav musical is West Side Story! Wouldnt hurt to watch that one...

I couldn't have been happier with the teacher this year, so she will be getting a token of our appreciation. This isn't taking the high road, this is just doing for us what we think is appropriate.
I agree with you, most of the teachers couldn't 'help' what happened this year and did a great job after the strike. All teachers deserve appreciation. I like someones idea before about the kid writing a nice letter to the teacher. I'm sure that would mean more to the teacher than an actual material gift.
~* chanel *~
Good for you-showing your appreciation. This same issue came up at Christmas and parents still gave.
My kids are still bringing home the usual amount of homework and are still working hard in the classroom. I know of three tests my son will have next week in addition to the three he has from now until Friday. I can tell you that things have not stalled at our elementary school, at least with the two teachers my kids have (they're excellent, by the way.) They're hanging in there and Im very proud of them.
I couldn't agree with you more my kids are still coming home with homework also. I have a wonderful teacher for my youngest who is almost ready to deliver and she has not skipped a day of school since the weather has changed and I feel for her with the heat and all. This teacher is a trooper. I will have to say that the Haine School teacher's Rock (Ok I know some have had problems but more good teachers then bad).
Mine went to HMS where they encountered their first deadwood teacher in 6th grade.
Both my kids are now bringing home MUCH less work lately. Much less...
Fine with me, but again, they are all getting ripped off of a full educational school year. They are way under the required (by state law) number of days. No absences at this point will be marked unexcused either. It's a free-for-all.
just received a letter from the truancy officer. Seems child had 2 unexcused abcenses in the past 2 weeks (fri & mon), no other unexcused ones. This elementary. Also know of another as well. What's going on here?
Want to know what is going on? Call the school.
Well I couldn't say anything about this subject cause I didn't want to ruin it just in case our teacher reads this blog. Well seeing I was room mom this year and had a bunch of great other mom's in my kids class we threw a baby shower for our teacher and collected $125.00 for a gift card and even had kids bring in gifts for this teacher. I had an incrediable year with her and would like her to know how wonderful she is.
Just remember people their is good and bad in every work place and if your un-happy then you need to address it with either the teacher or higher up. You also have to understand that when a child goes out into the work force they will not all be happy go lucky people in the world so they will be dealing with all sorts of people and they really need to figure out how to deal with that person.
I also would like to say thanks Haine Middle and Elementary schools my kids and I had a great year.
From my experience, the older the kids get the more you want them to try and deal with teacher issues themselves. At the high school level, I think the kids need to learn to try and work with their teachers to fix a situation. Mom and Dad definitely aren't around to deal with the bad college professors. Anyway, if the kids still get nowhere with the teacher, then I will step in, but not until they try and fix the problem themselves.
I can't agree more that there are good and bad everywhere. When they move to the upper grades and have a different teacher for every class, the chances are greater they are going to find a bad teacher.
So far,I have only had donations from 8 children in our class for a teachers gift (deadline was to be Monday) Not looking too good here. Question, should all kids get to sign the card for the gift?
Any advice???
You can't take it out on the kids just because parents don't want to give a gift. All kids should sign the card no matter what. In our class we did have a nice amount but that isn't from every kid donating but we made sure all gifts and gift card was from the class we didn't want to leave a kid out and make them cry or feel bad. Kids can't help what their parents do please remember that.
always felt the 'teacher gift' should be from the class, therefore, kids names should not be individualized. Some of 'us' never get the info from the kid, regarding the gift.
~* chanel *~
All kids should sign the card. One of my kid's room parents sent home a note indicating that the gift is from all children, regardless of contribution.
I also have one child who I have to search through the backpack to find papers related to anything going on at school. A lot of information never makes it to the parents.
I agree w/ everyone that all the kids should sign the card ...
~Faith
PS SVMom, I can so relate 2 the searching of the backpack 2 find papers realted 2 anything going on a school !!
All kids should sign the card, IMO. What age group are you dealing with?
I have been involved in the class a lot. I do know all of these children and most of the parents. I am surprised that this is happening since we had a really good teacher IMO. I am hoping that more comes this week and that I am not the one "footing" the bill because I feel bad. I am also in charge of the End of Year party for these 2nd graders. I guess I am feeling kind of down about the whole thing.
I was also the room mom and remember you make it what you want. I was not going to let those kids down this year. I had another co-room mom who pulled out on me cause she was mad over the strike well the only person she hurt was her kid and the kids in the class. You don't need to foot a bill you give her what you get and maybe include a nice note or poem on nice paper framed. Doesn't have to be elaborate.
that I have received a good amount of responses to the donation for the Teachers gift today!! I guess eveyone has been busy and just was late to send it in. I am very happy!!
I am glad to hear that honestly I really don't think people are that mean that they wouldn't give a donation specially if they had a great year. I am going to miss this year due to having a wonderful teacher and great kids in her class. Everyone that has young kids enjoy them cause they grow up quick. Can't believe my baby is going to 4th. grade.
You are like the "mom" around here. Always the first to respond - and in a helping manner.
