Seneca Valley School Board Member Arrested On DUI Charge
Suspect Involved In Accident In Lawrence County

POSTED: 2:55 pm EDT June 19, 2008
UPDATED: 3:36 pm EDT June 19, 2008

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Pa. -- A Seneca Valley School Board member faces driving under the influence charges after an accident in Lawrence County.

Anthony Evans, 44, had both feet bandaged and used the help of a walker to get to his court appearance Thursday afternoon.

Court records show he blew a blood-alcohol level of .31 percent, three times over the legal limit.

Evans is a two-term Seneca Valley School Board member, having served on the board since 2001.

Channel 11's Amy Marcinkiewicz asked him what he had to say about his position and to those who voted for him.

"I am not on the board," he told her. "I resigned."

The Seneca Valley School District said that is not true and that it has not received anything from Evans about a resignation.

According to court records, police found Evans in his car the morning of March 21 in a ditch along a Lawrence County Road.

Police said Evans told them he was homeless and was living in his car.

Police said the radio was blaring and Evans had his coat on backward. The officer said Evans needed urgent care. Both of Evans feet had gangrene.

Marcinkiewicz will have a complete report tonight at 5.

I feel very sorry for his 3 children.

This has been circulating for a while. Why was this covered up?

word on the street is Mr. Evans was missing for quite some time. I bet there is legal issue why he was not removed from the board without resigning. As far as a cover up the crime happended in Lawerence County three months ago. If this happend in Butler County the community would have know about it the next day. No communication from Lawrence to Butler. Besides he stated on the news tonight that he no longer lives in the district. What a shame? I will pray for him to turn his life around. But I do nto believe for one minute there is a cover up going on.

Blood alcohol level of .31-homeless-no longer living in the district? Had he attended board meetings and voted since January? He is still on record as a board member, they haven't received a letter of resignation. A person like this can make major decisions and play a role in running the school-I feel sorry for the children in this district. Absolutely disgusting to me. What type of role model is this? This is also a moral issue wrt being a school board member. What about all the programs the schools offer to help students-D.A.R.E.-SADD-intervention teams .JMHO!!

Elected officials, no matter what office they are elected into, are held at a higher standard than the average citizen and should live up to those standards.

What a nice finishing touch for such a horrific year at Seneca Valley!

Let's hope for a better year next year -God knows our kids deserve it.

The ongoing joke was that he was always "missing from photo" in district publications. . .

he was always missing from the photo.

.3 That's horrible. So much for setting a good example for his boys!

was that Mr. Evans has been MIA for quite some time. I know more about him than I am able to write, but he has been an embarassment to many board members. Ask some of your acquaintances if they know about him and don't feel sorry for just his kids but his ex or soon to be ex-wife too. I haven't researched his attendance records, but he seems to never be in attendance at meetings. I have also heard he was "off" the board. Not sure that it's official, but clearly they need to make it official now.

since October (not every one I only missed three) and Mr. Evans has never been there. Every vote the board took that I witnessed only had 8 votes cast. Truly a shame. I bet there is some legal issue that is why the board did not vote him off. Since he was elected by the people I guess the people must remove him if he does not resign.

This situation is very unfortunate for him and his family. Too bad some people will choose to view this as a reflection on SVSD or its Board. To me it's no different than when anyone else screws up. We all know of examples of bad apples turning up in the schools whether it's Board members, administrators or teachers.

Despite the bashing on all sides that went on during the strike on both sides, the Board members are generally just some Average Joes who decided to run for an unpaid, volunteer public office - whether it's because they actually cared about the schools, wanted some power, or any possible combination of other reasons.

Cover-up, who knows? My theory is that all kinds of potentially "newsworthy" stuff never makes the news. BAC of 0.31 - incredibly high, as Angrymom noted, could be due to something at least partially not due to consumption.

Held to a standard? Maybe... We had a President who received oral favors in the oval office and then lied about it, and his wife went along with the lies and stayed with him, and the country was ready to put her into the same office. So I guess the standard isn't that high after all.

karma's picture

Let's see-oral favors in the oval office vs. driving with a blood alcohol level of .31-hmm??

Maybe we should offer some type of compensation for School Board Members and then we can raise the standards, and keep the average Joe's from running the school district.

angrymom's picture

You missed the point. He is showing that our standards as a nation have dropped as far as quality of the people we elect to office.

karma's picture

I do agree with that. Maybe this guy could get an ACLU attorney?

concerned parent's picture

Obviously this man has fallen on some very hard times. You are so right about the board consisting of Average Joes who decide to volunteer their time to serve the public. We can't forget that we elect them and the board can't control who their fellow board members are.
